Crete, Greece’s largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches to tall mountains. Birthplace of Zeus and home to the Minoan civilisation, it is a mixture of amazing history and culture. Its capital Heraklion is home to the archaelogical site of Knossos and the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which amongst others houses the Phaistos Disc, datting to the Bronze Ages, engraved with one of the first written languages.
