DAY 1

LISBON AIRPORT-LISBON

Transfer to Santarém and Fatima. We leave Lisbon and travel to Santarém, home to a 13th century Eucharistic miracle then directly to Fátima. There we will visit the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, a Roman Catholic Marian basilica. Its construction began in 1928 and it was consecrated in October 1953. The sanctuary was built on the spot where the three Portuguese children saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. The Chapel of Apparitions is the most visited, especially on May13th, the date of the Fatima apparitions. About four million pilgrims visit every year. While in Fátima we will have Mass. We will visit some of the iconic places in Fatima, there will be Mass and free time. Visit the Information office and ask them for the Camino/Fatima stamp for your credential, your first stamp. Overnight in Fatima. (D,B)

DAY 2

FATIMA-TUI

From Fátima we go on to Porto (UNESCO World Heritage Centre), the second most populated city in Portugal and world-renowned for its Port wine. It’s off to the Ribeira quarter, on the bank of the Douro River. There we will have time to enjoy the Portuguese gastronomy at the restaurants facing the river, and of course try the varieties of the Port Wine.

We leave the city, heading to the countryside, joining up with the Portuguese Way to Santiago. We will discover the Ponte de Lima, the oldest town in Portugal, with its historical buildings and the impressive bridge over the Lima River that marks the Camino de Santiago. After visiting Ponte de Lima we head to the north to rejoin the Camino and walk up and downhill sections, for 6 km. We are not in Spain but we will soon see the river Miño, which borders between the region of Galicia in Spain and Portugal. On the way, we will discover the traditional Portuguese architecture and some villages close to the Camino like Rubiaes. Once we reach the river Miño, we will visit the fortress of Valença do Minho, a great place with a bustling market. After our visit to Valença we will cross the international bridge and reach Tui, in Galicia (Spain). We will rejoin our bus to take us to our lodging in Tui. After check-in at our accommodation, there will be time for some R & R and dinner. We will spend two nights in Tui. This is our starting point for the Camino de Santiago in its Portuguese version. What our pilgrims are saying:

"I knew that if I did the pilgrimage, and was walking 12 miles a day, I did not want to be walking around afterwards, at night, in a strange place, looking for a decent place to stay. I had stayed in hostels before, and I did not want another "bunk bed, bed bug" experience. At the end of the walk, I wanted a clean, comfortable room, and a nice dinner. Medseas and Bill Williams provided that, and much more. The hotels, especially the Paradors, bordered on the luxurious, the breakfasts and dinners were excellent. The taxis that took us to our destinations and transported our luggage ran like clockwork. All logistics and contingencies were meticulously planned and accounted for. The only thing I had to concern myself with was the walking. And all of this was provided at a cost that to me represented a tremendous value - a bargain, if you will. I highly recommend Medseas and Bill Williams to anyone interested in doing the Camino."
